Kansas Oil and Gas Production Data Vintage Study 2026: Research question and scope

Kansas production data can be viewed or downloaded through public KCC and KGS routes, then reshaped for lease, well, field, or operator analysis. The analytical risk is not arithmetic; it is losing the exact query, vintage, identifier, unit, or reporting period that gave a number meaning. This study sets out a reproducible vintage-control method for land data and diligence support.

The unit of analysis is one public-source observation at one access time. Facts are limited to what the cited publisher or artifact displays. Analysis compares those facts. Inference is labeled and states what additional evidence would confirm it. Uncertainty includes missing images, unclear dates, changing interfaces, conflicting identifiers, and records not exposed online. This study does not determine title, ownership, boundaries, regulatory compliance, engineering sufficiency, environmental condition, or legal effect.

Capture the evidence before analysis

Before opening a download, record the official landing page, query filters, result scope, displayed dataset title, reporting period, any stated update date, retrieval timestamp, filename, byte count, and SHA-256 hash. Preserve the untouched file. If the interface provides no explicit vintage, say so and use the retrieval time only as evidence of when the observation was made.

Screens and downloads may not have identical scopes. A screen could paginate or summarize while a file contains detail. Record both roles and compare totals only after confirming the same commodity, unit, period, and population. A copied total without its filters is not a reproducible research result.

Profile identifiers, periods, and units

Inventory the columns, row count, identifier formats, null markers, period fields, and units before transforming values. Check whether the data is organized by well, lease, field, operator, or another reporting unit. Do not assume that a well-level identifier is present merely because the user searched by a well name.

Keep oil and gas measures in their source units. Keep zero distinct from blank, missing row, suppressed value, and nonapplicable field. Store the literal reporting-period label and a parsed analysis period separately. If a monthly record is later rolled into a yearly total, retain the aggregation code and input row count.

Compare vintages with classified differences

Join preserved vintages on documented source keys. Test uniqueness before relying on a key; if collisions exist, report them and identify the additional fields used. Classify results as added row, removed row, changed numeric value, blank-to-value, value-to-blank, or unchanged. Include both source values and the arithmetic difference.

The comparison does not reveal why a value changed. A revision, correction, late filing, scope change, identifier migration, or query difference could all produce a variance. Causal labels require supporting publisher documentation or a related official record. Until then, the result is simply a difference between two dated observations.

Connect material variances to the land question

The threshold for material review should be defined before analysis and tied to the use case. A division-order or acquisition review may prioritize missing periods, operator changes, identifier splits, or sustained variances rather than the largest absolute volume. Store the rule, not just the flagged rows.

For each material exception, reopen the well and operator records, confirm identity, and look for completion, transfer, or other official documents that might explain timing. Keep that explanation as sourced analysis. Do not infer ownership, payment entitlement, well performance, or regulatory compliance from public production data alone.

Reproducibility and limitations

A second analyst should be able to obtain the two preserved files, verify hashes, rerun the normalization, reproduce counts by change class, and trace sampled values back to their source rows. The handoff should include query receipts, schema profiles, transformation rules, exception thresholds, results, and unresolved questions.

This method does not audit the full Kansas reporting population or establish the accuracy of reported values. Public interfaces can change, and later revisions can supersede an earlier observation. The durable conclusion is limited to what each preserved vintage displayed and how the values differed under a documented method.

Operational worksheet

The minimum worksheet is observation-centered. A later value creates another row instead of overwriting earlier evidence.

  • dataset or query title: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time. Keep any normalized or inferred value in a separate field with its transformation rule.
  • operator filter: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time.
  • lease or well filter: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time.
  • reporting period: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time. Keep any normalized or inferred value in a separate field with its transformation rule.
  • displayed update date: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time.
  • retrieval timestamp: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time.
  • download URL: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time. Keep any normalized or inferred value in a separate field with its transformation rule.
  • file hash: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time.
  • source value: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time.
  • normalized value: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time. Keep any normalized or inferred value in a separate field with its transformation rule.
  • change class: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time.
  • supporting record: Record the literal source value, publisher, record role, labeled event date, and access time.

Sort the completed worksheet by source event and then observation time, not by discovery order. Give every material conflict an owner, next source, and stop condition. If a field is unavailable, record the attempted query and result rather than filling the gap from memory or assumption.

Data sources and methodology

We reviewed the official Kansas source routes listed below on October 7, 2026. We inventoried each route's publisher, record role, searchable identifiers, stated dates, download or document functions, and public limitations. The method preserves source strings, direct locators, query inputs, access timestamps, and material files with byte counts and SHA-256 hashes. Normalization and comparisons occur in separate derived fields so another researcher can reproduce the work.

For quality control, a second reviewer should rerun decisive searches, reopen every source used for a material conclusion, verify file hashes, check identifier formatting and leading zeroes, and review all conflicts rather than only matched records. Facts, analysis, inference, and unavailable evidence should be visibly separated in the handoff.

Evidence layer Required control What it does not prove
Public query observation Interface, inputs, filters, result locator, and access time A complete historical record
Source artifact Publisher, record role, native identifier, labeled date, and page locator The meaning of an unstated or ambiguous event
Derived comparison Preserved source values, transformation rule, reviewer, and run time Title, compliance, engineering sufficiency, or legal effect

Limitations

This is a source-architecture and workflow study, not a statistical sample of Kansas wells, operators, production reports, completion records, plugging records, or database accuracy. We did not test authenticated KOLAR functions, agency back-office systems, every possible query combination, all physical holdings, paid sources, or client records. Interfaces and underlying records may change after the checked date.

A negative result is bounded by the documented interface, inputs, filters, coverage, and access time. It does not prove that an event or document does not exist. Public records also do not eliminate the need for qualified legal, regulatory, engineering, survey, environmental, accounting, or title review.

Conclusion

For Kansas oil and gas production data vintage control, remote land support is most useful when it preserves provenance and shortens the professional reviewer’s exception list. A defensible packet connects each value to its source and time, keeps incompatible record roles separate, exposes conflicts, and states exactly where inference begins. That supports title research, lease and well data maintenance, GIS coordination, diligence, and document preparation without transferring professional judgment to an administrative workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Is the newest public screen the complete historical record?

No. It is a current, dated observation. Earlier filings, scans, transfers, downloads, physical holdings, or later corrections may be needed to reconstruct the relevant history.

Can a support team make the final professional determination?

Support staff can locate, preserve, transcribe, compare, and route evidence. Qualified reviewers remain responsible for title, legal, survey, engineering, regulatory, accounting, and other professional conclusions.

What should happen when KCC and KGS records differ?

Keep both observations, confirm identity, compare record roles and dates, and open a focused exception. The difference may reflect timing, scope, correction, or system design; do not invent the cause.
